See what score you need on the final
Calculate the score you need on a final exam to reach your desired overall grade, based on your current grade and the weighting of each.
needed on final = (desired overall grade − current grade × its weight) ÷ final exam weight
What if the score I need is above 100%?
That means your desired overall grade isn't mathematically achievable anymore, even with a perfect score on the final — you'd need to either accept a lower overall grade or see if extra credit is available.
Does this work for any weighted grading scheme?
Yes, as long as you know the weight of your current grade and the final exam as percentages of the total — the same formula works whether it's a two-component course or one with many small weighted pieces, as long as you group everything else into one combined 'current grade' figure.
