What you owe for fasts not made up
Calculate the fidyah due for missed Ramadan fasts in Malaysia, including the amount that multiplies for each year a qada fast is delayed.
fidyah = days missed × cupak per day × rate · cupak per day = Ramadans passed (delayed qada), or 1 (unable to fast)
Does the fidyah really double every year?
On the muktamad Shafi'i position, yes — one cupak per missed day for each Ramadan that passes without the fast being made up. Five days delayed by three Ramadans is fifteen cupak, not five. The fasts themselves do not multiply: you still owe five, not fifteen.
Can I pay fidyah instead of fasting because it is easier?
No. Fidyah replaces the fast only for someone who genuinely cannot fast and has no prospect of being able to. If you missed fasts for a temporary reason — illness you recovered from, travel, pregnancy — you owe the qada, and fidyah is only the penalty for leaving it too long.
Why is the rate different from my friend in another state?
Because it is the cash value of one cupak of the local staple food, and each state Islamic authority sets and publishes its own figure from local rice prices. Use your own state's rate rather than the default here.
Who do I pay it to?
To the poor and needy (fakir and miskin), either directly or through your state zakat authority, most of which collect fidyah online alongside zakat.
